Establishment of the Forum

The Consortium established, and officially launched, Forum for Environmental Practitioners in Africa (FEPA) on May 19, 2023, during the “Consultative workshop on anticipated decision-making process for field trials and post-release monitoring of genetic biocontrol agents and their derived products”, at Nairobi, Kenya. The objective was to provide a forum for enhancing interaction, technical capacity towards meeting global and national requirements and best practices on genetic biocontrol technologies among environmental practitioners.

Vision

To be a one-stop resource centre of technical advice and expertise to support decision making process(es) on genetic biocontrol technologies in Africa.

Mission Statement

To be the multidisciplinary Forum dedicated to supporting excellence in decision making process(es) of genetic biocontrol technologies through strategic, environmental, social, and economic impacts and developing the highest standards of ethics and proficiency in the environmental professions in Africa.

Objectives

The main objective of FEPA is to provide a Forum for enhancing interaction, technical capacity towards meeting global and national requirements and best practices on genetic biocontrol technologies among environmental practitioners in Africa.

Specific Objectives of FEPA

  1. To establish and operate a professional network of persons involved in and committed to improving the process and implementation of environmental assessment, analysis, public participation and reporting on genetic biocontrol technology.
  2. To offer technical and regulatory capacity strengthening programs on genetic biocontrol technologies in partnerships with academia, research institutions, regulatory bodies, and other relevant institutions.
  3. To provide a forum for development and review of guidelines, raise awareness, providing training and technical support to other key stakeholders, stakeholder engagement and creating public trust at the national, regional, and global levels during research and field trials/release of genetic biocontrol technologies.
  4. Improving communication on emerging innovations and biotechnologies among environmental practitioners and other professionals.
  5. Advancing the science and art of environmental planning, analysis, and evaluation in Africa.
  6. Supporting research and education which is beneficial to the public interest in environmental management and planning.
  7. Promoting the ethical conduct of environmental professionals.

Membership to FEPA

FEPA is a multi-disciplinary network for professionals who include researchers, environmental experts, policy makers and regulators from industry, government, academic institutions, and the private sector and non-state actors in Africa. members of the Forum is open to all professionals that are currently engaged in the areas of environment, biosafety and related fields in Africa.
