Nominations Now Open for the Montrone-Seigel Prize in Biomedical Sciences

The Montrone-Seigel Prize in Biomedical Sciences will honor outstanding investigators who are making a difference in human health. This juried award – which includes a $100,000 honorarium – will recognize breakthroughs in basic, clinical, or translational research led by scientists aged 52 or younger.

This prize is made possible by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), based on the generous contributions of two board members, Paul Montrone, PhD, and Fred Seigel.

Nominate a promising researcher for the Montrone-Seigel Prize in Biomedical Sciences at montroneseigelprize.evalato.com. The entry deadline is Friday, March 6, 2026, at 5 p.m. ET.

The recipient will be recognized at the annual FNIH Awards Ceremony, our celebration of science, in Washington, DC, in October.

The 2025 recipient was David Liu, PhD, Director of the Merkin Institute of Transformative Technologies in Healthcare. He is also chair of the faculty of Broad Institute and Professor at Harvard University. Dr. Liu led the development of innovative gene editing technologies that are being used world wide to treat genetic diseases, including in at leasty 23 clinical trials targeting cancer, blood diseases, metabolic disorders and other conditions. He and his lab developed new technologiues – base editing and prime editing- that can precisely and safely correct disease causing DNA Mutations. These tools have shown promise for treating inherited blood disorders such as sickle-cell disease, certain forms of leukemia, an inherited form of high cholestoral and an serious liver and luch disease affecting 100,000 people in the United States alone.
