WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION PROPOSES QUALITY ASSURANCE MECHANISM FOR MODIFIED MOSQUITO PRODUCTION

WHO Prequalification of Vector Control Products opens.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Prequalification Unit Vector Control Product Assessment Team (PQT/VCP) has developed a proposal to pilot a new Quality Assurance Mechanism for the assessment of Modified Mosquito Production.

This move marks a significant step towards strengthening quality assurance for emerging vector control technologies.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Prequalification Unit Vector Control Product Assessment Team (PQT/ VCP) is the official global mechanism responsible for evaluating, inspecting and pre-qualifying vector control tools like insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual sprays and spatial emanators. These tools play an important role in protecting populations from mosquitoes and other vectors that transmit diseases.

The proposed pilot will explore how a quality assurance framework can be applied to the production of modified mosquitoes, with a focus on establishing appropriate assessment processes and requirements. The initiative is expected to promote consistency, transparency and confidence in the quality of production processes associated with these emerging technologies.
Two documents have been published for the purpose of a 60-day public comment period, prior to the launch of the proposed pilot. From August 28, 2026, to October 30, 2026, members of the public are welcome to send comments.

The World Health Organization notes that vector control interventions are considered health products and have contributed substantially to preventing vector-borne diseases.

The use of vector control products (VCPs) has also been critical in preventing the transmission of other major vector-borne diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika virus disease, Chagas disease, lymphatic filariasis, visceral leishmaniasis, and human African trypanosomiasis.

Through this initiative, the WHO aims to support countries and public health programmes in making informed decisions regarding emerging technologies while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
