Six Webinars, One Mission: Reflecting on AGBC’s Journey to Build Trust in Science
The African Genetic Biocontrol Consortium (AGBC) has concluded its six-part Truth Under the Microscope webinar series, marking an important step towards making science more accessible, understandable and relevant to everyday life.
Held between 6 August and 10 September 2026, the series recorded 335 registration entries and 373 attendance entries, bringing together researchers, science communicators, policymakers and other stakeholders to share knowledge, experiences and ideas.
The conversations began with tackling disinformation and misinformation in emerging technologies and life sciences, before exploring how to communicate emerging technologies with confidence.
Participants then examined practical approaches to checking scientific claims and clarifying science for different audiences, followed by discussions on reporting science accurately and responsibly.
The fifth webinar focused on communicating science for policy impact, while the final session, Rising Voices – Preparing Africa’s Next Science Communicators, explored how to nurture and support the next generation of African science communicators.
Beyond the numbers, one message stood out throughout the series: good science communication is not just about presenting facts. It is about listening, building trust and helping people make sense of science and its implications for their lives.
The discussions also highlighted the need for stronger African voices, greater collaboration and more opportunities for practical training and mentorship.
As AGBC reflects on the journey, the lessons and connections made through these six webinars offer a valuable foundation for future learning, partnerships and public engagement.
The webinars may have ended, but the conversations and the work of building trust in science continue.
